Introduction

ANANAS stands for Almost but Not completely Automatic News Archiving Script. It is a web application that makes the process of media coding easier and could provide immediate realtime insights and feedback afterwards.

If an organisation, government or a company is in the news regularly, it's likely that they are interested in what the news is reporting about them. If it is positive, negative, whithin which department it fits etc. There are several search engines (eg. Meltwater News) that can search the tier online newspapers around the world for certain keywords. The most obvious keyword would be the name of the organisation or company, retrieving the most hits of news publications that are related to this organisation or company.

After the news publications have been indexed, the search engine has the ability to output the results in an XML feed, listing the headings, leadings, dates etc. of the found news publications. ANANAS uses this data and writes it to a database, to enable much greater funcitonality.

After that data has been sorted and parsed into the database, ANANAS can do the following:

  • Save copies and screenshots of websites
  • Count links to a website
  • Allow the user to search through the database
  • Provide interactive charts and insights in the data
  • Create time graphs and pie charts from data
  • Export data as Excel sheets, XML or RSS

With many more to come.
